It delivers comprehensive intellectual training in political ideas, government operations, and essential skills such as research, presentation, and analysis. Students explore a broad range of modules in politics and American studies, including global politics, parliamentary systems, international human rights, the American presidency, civil rights, immigration, US foreign policy, and British-American party politics. Additionally, it covers American and Canadian history, literature, culture, film, music, and art.The programme also features the unique Hollywood Internships, offering hands-on experience in creative industries through placements with partners like Disney and Warner. Activities include script review, audience data analysis, and event support. In year one, core modules focus on international relations and political theory; year two allows optional specialisation and work placements; and the final year culminates in a dissertation alongside advanced electives.
In year one you will typically take modules in international relations, political theory, and comparative politics, as well as American history and culture. You will learn to compare political institutions and behaviour in Western liberal democracies, gaining a thorough understanding of the history of political ideas. In year two, you will choose from a range of optional modules to begin tailoring your degree to your interests and career aspirations. There is also an optional Work Placement module for developing hands-on experience and enhancing employability. In your final year, you will undertake a dissertation on a topic of your choice in Politics or American and Canadian studies. You will also take optional modules from a wide selection to make up your remaining credits.
